Physical Education

The most important aspect of Lacon Childe School's P.E. department is the team ethos, working together for the benefit of the pupils and the wider community towards common goals.

The Department is very successful not only through its achievements as a Sports College but also through the continued successful designation as a Sports Mark School. In April 2010, the subject specific inspection judged the Department to be "good" with many "outstanding" features.

Department staff are hard working and enthusiastic about all that we do as a Sports College, setting high standards both of themselves and the pupils. The teaching and learning environment is very positive and pupils engage in fun and exciting activities. The team is incredibly dynamic, forward thinking and provides an extensive range of activities both during curriculum time and as extra-curricular activities. Most recently these have included mountain biking, sailing, canoeing, golf , horse riding and zumba as well as the more traditional sports.

All pupils in Key Stage 3 and 4 receive 2 hours of high quality P.E. each week as part of their core curriculum. Students opting for P.E in Key Stage 4 receive an additional 2.5 hours per week. At Key Stage 4 all pupils follow the Entry Level P.E. qualification during their core curriculum time. BTEC First Certificate in Sport and GCSE Double Award are the accredited courses available from the option system. Students are given the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of coaching courses which sees them help out with a number of whole school and primary school events.

Duke of Edinburgh is offered to all pupils in Year 9 (Bronze Award) with many opting to carry on in Year 10 to the Silver Award.

All pupils follow a broad and balanced curriculum that includes the following:

Athletics; Dance; Games; Gymnastics; Outdoor & Adventurous Activities

Pupils are allowed to choose their own P.E curriculum based on an option programme that includes the following:

  • Athletics
  • Dance
  • Games
  • Gymnastics
  • Outdoor & Adventurous Activities

The Department has developed a strong relationship with University of Worcester for several years and mentored a number of PGCE students. The lead mentor for the Department is also involved in the interview process for prospective PGCE students. In addition to this we regularly receive work experience students from the local further education establishments.

Links with our family primary schools are very strong and include rotational activity modules (chosen by the individual PLTs) based at Lacon Childe, where primary teachers and specialist staff work in partnership to provide high quality teaching and learning for the primary pupils, access to specialist facilities, and valuable inset for the primary teachers.

We host an extensive range of activities and festivals for all of our family primary schools. These are actively supported by our Sports Leaders. Through the School Sport Partnership we provide access to a number of school sport coaches offering specialist knowledge in a wide variety of different activities. In addition, we hold an annual Gifted and Talented Multi-Skill Academy for pupils in Year 5 and 6, host the Adopt-a-School programme, and run regular holiday activities, to name but a few.
